چکیده

Our purpose in this chapter is to account for coherence relations within the Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG) framework. But before doing so, we shall first give an overview of previous work on coherence and coherence relations. There is no consensus on what coherence means, but the most widely held view is that it explains how hearers and readers construct relationships among the units in any piece of discourse. A coherent discourse is one where the hearer/reader can establish a relation between the current piece of discourse and previous pieces. This connection is often interpreted to be a connection among discourse units, but it can also refer to connections between the current piece of discourse and the context. In the Hallidayan tradition (Halliday / Hasan 1976), coherence is contrasted with cohesion. Cohesion is created through nonstructural relations such as reference, repetition, synonymy and the like, between presupposing and presupposed elements in a text. Implicit and explicit coherence relations

Jan Renkema, in his Introduction to Discourse Studies, describes current research in coherence relations (also called rhetorical or discourse relations), and lists a few open questions in that area. One of the most important issues, from both a theoretical and applied point of view, is the signaling of relations, that is, the explicit marking of the presence of a relation. In this paper, I ques...

there are two components: (i) John could not go to the party and (ii) He was busy with his work. These components are connected to each other by a causal relation: John’s inability to go to the party is caused by the fact that he was doing his work. Coherence relations are often signalled by discourse markers (DMs). DMs are lexical expressions (such as although, because, since and thus) which b...

Annotation Guidelines for Rhetorical Structure

Rhetorical Structure Theory (Mann and Thompson, 1988, Taboada and Mann, 2006) postulates that a coherent text can be characterized by means of a tree structure whose leaves are the “elementary discourse units” (henceforth: EDUs), and whose internal nodes are labelled with a coherence relation. The theory proposes a list of about 25 such relations, which may be said to hold between two EDUs or (...

Signalling Subject Matter and Presentational Coherence Relations in Discourse: a Corpus Study

In this study, we examine how subject matter and presentational coherence relations in Rhetorical Structure Theory (Mann and Thompson 1988) are signalled in written discourse, and whether they differ quantitatively or qualitatively in terms of the signalling devices involved. By signalling we mean textual signals (discourse markers such as although, because and thus, and also signals such as te...
